“They’ve got great bargains in there,” said a woman loading a box full of tinware into her trunk in the parking lot of the Presbyterian Home gym. A 3-day Thrift Store Fundraiser was in progress — July 9-11 — the first of it’s kind for the Home’s Thrift Store. The sale was made possible mainly through the generosity of two estates and a living donor.
“We received a very large estate that included the contents of an 8,000 square foot home, and another smaller estate,” explained PHFC President Doug Marshall. “And when the Somewhere In Time Antique Shop in Alabaster went out of business, the person who bought it donated the entire inventory to us. We have also accepted a lot of donations at the drop box at Shades Valley Presbyterian Church in Mountain Brook.”
While the campus has been closed to most visitors since mid-March, special care was taken to make this fundraiser a safe environment. Shoppers and workers were required to wear masks and ventilation and crowd movement were considered in setting up the sale. A first day crowd and steady traffic throughout the sale led to a successful fundraiser. All proceeds from the Thrift Store, including this sale, go to benefit the Home’s ministry of caring for at-risk and homeless children and their families.
